How Did Wayne Rainey Get Paralyzed?

Wayne Rainey slid into the gravel trap at high speed, cracking his spine against the raked surface designed as a safety measure for motor racing.

Due to the injuries sustained by his tenacious opponent Kevin Schwantz, the championship was won. As a result of his injuries, Rainey experienced persistent paralysis from the chest down.

Before the accident, between 1990 and 1992, Rainey hit his stride and won three straight 500cc championships for Yamaha.

In 1993, Rainey and Kevin Schwantz waged an aggressive campaign to capture Rainey's fourth straight championship.

He led the race and the championship by 11 points when he crashed and perished at the Italian Grand Prix in Misano.

Details On Wayne Rainey Career

After Lawson transferred to the Grand Prix circuit the following year, Wayne Rainey took over as the leading rider, assisting Kawasaki in winning the 1983 National Championship.

He agreed to compete for the newly formed Kenny Roberts Yamaha racing team in the 250cc division of the 1984 Grand Prix World Championship.

His fierce rivalry with Kevin Schwantz began when the two competed for the championship in the 1987 Superbike National Championship.

Even though Rainey won the competition, the acrimonious rivalry between the two competitors had just begun.
