Robert “Bobby” E. Crimo III is identified as the Highland Park Parade shooter.

The Fourth of July parade in Highland Park was stopped when gunfire was heard early on Monday.

Town officials said on Facebook that suburban police were responding to an "incident" in downtown Highland Park around 10:10 a.m. Witnesses claimed to have seen numerous fire trucks and police officers.

According to the Lake County Sheriff's Office, its deputies were assisting Highland Park police with a nearby gunshot. Fourth Fest has been postponed, according to officials. It was supposed to begin at noon.

The general public is asked to stay away from the downtown area. The incident's circumstances are yet unknown.

An AP reporter was told to get in touch with Highland Park Police through the sheriff's office. No one was immediately available for comment, according to the police department.

The city said on its website that the July 4th parade would include floats, marching bands, novelty groups, community entries, and other special entertainment.

According to the city, it was planned to start at 10 a.m. CT at the intersection of Laurel and St. Johns Avenues and proceed north on St. Johns Avenue, then west on Central Avenue, and then to Sunset Park.

According to US Census data, the suburb of Highland Park has a population of over 30,000 people and a per capita income of about $90,000, which is nearly thrice the US average.

Following the massacre, the surrounding suburbs of Deerfield and Evanston postponed their July 4th parades.

Shooting Leads Death Of Over 9

Police reported that a shooting at a Fourth of July parade in a Chicago suburb left at least five people dead and 19 injured.

The annual procession was halted shortly after it started at 10 a.m. because of the gunshot in Highland Park. Five persons were killed, according to a statement from Highland Park Police, and 19 other people were hospitalized.

It was not known if the 19 hospitalized patients included the five fatalities. Police described it as an ongoing issue and said they are still looking for the suspect
